LESSON #20:
“DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE”
In 1886, at the height of the outwardly sanctimonious
Victorian Age, Robert Lewis Stevenson wrote the novel,
“Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde”. It caused no small stir among
people who had a tendency toward social hypocrisy.
In the Victorian Age, the focus of people was on maintaining
an outward appearance of respectability. The dark subject of
inward lusts was a taboo topic, not discussed even among
the closest of friends.
The moral to the story was that Dr. Jekyll became more and
more intrigued with the sensual, dark side of Mr. Hyde. It
was a love-hate relationship for Dr. Jekyll as it is for many
Christians who are likewise tempted to explore the darkest
pleasures of evil. Dear Christian, if you become intrigued with
the pleasures of sin as did Dr. Jekyll in the novel, then the
outcome for you may be like the conclusion of the book in
which evil triumphs over good.
