LESSON #21:
“CRUCIFIED FLESH”
There was an old Indian Chief who was led to the Lord by a missionary. Having
explained the need to warfare against the Chief’s weakness toward drunkenness, the
missionary went his way. Months later he returned to the reservation to visit his new
convert to see how he was doing with his battle. The Indian Chief told the
missionary, “It’s like having bad black horse tied to one hand, and good white horse
tied to other hand. Bad black horse pulls me this way, good white horse pulls me
other way.” So the missionary asked the Chief, “Who is winning the war?”
The old Chief thought for a while and replied,
“Depends on which horse I feed!”
(origin of story unknown)
It is not difficult to see the point. You are the old Indian Chief,
a convert to the Lord. You have a bad black horse whose name is
flesh. You also have a good white horse whose name is spirit. These
two horses don’t like each other for they are contrary to one another.
Each horse wants you to feed it so it can be big and strong. You
must decide which horse you want to be big and strong. You can’t
feed both. You can’t serve both. You need to make up your mind
which horse you like best. Choose the spirit and feed him well!
Remember, if you walk after the spirit you will not fulfill the lusts of
the flesh!
