P. 21
Before we look at what constitutes the spiritual house of Christ, let us ponder the building principles Jesus
Himself set down as needful for a house that will be able to withstand the onslaught of Satan’s opposition.
Consider these words of Jesus found in Matthew Chapter Seven:

“UNLESS THE LORD BUILDS THE HOUSE, THEY LABOR IN VAIN WHO BUILD IT.”
Psm. 127:1
The above parable stresses the importance of building upon a solid foundation. The “sayings of Jesus” is the
bedrock upon which the house is enabled to withstand all the forms of pressure Satan brings upon it.
Our spiritual house also has a specified foundation upon which it is to be built:
“NOW THEREFORE, YOU ARE NO LONGER STRANGERS AND FOREIGNERS,
BUT FELLOW CITIZENS WITH THE SAINTS AND MEMBERS OF THE HOUSEHOLD OF GOD.
HAVING BEEN BUILT ON
THE FOUNDATION OF THE APOSTLES AND THE PROPHETS,
JESUS CHRIST HIMSELF BEING THE CHIEF CORNERSTONE,
IN WHOM THE WHOLE BUILDING, BEING JOINED TOGETHER, GROWS INTO A HOLY TEMPLE
IN THE LORD, IN WHOM YOU ALSO ARE BEING BUILT TOGETHER
FOR A HABITATION OF GOD IN THE SPIRIT.” Eph. 2:18-22
In Matthew’s account the foundation is limited to the sayings of Jesus. Paul’s account of the spiritual house
which Christ is building speaks of the foundation to include the sayings of the apostles and the prophets along
with Jesus’ sayings as the “Chief Cornerstone.” When Peter warned of mockers that would come in the last
days, he gave this reminder pertaining to the importance of the sayings of the apostles and the prophets:
JESUS CHRIST, “...I STIR UP YOUR PURE MINDS BY
THE CHIEF CORNERSTONE WAY OF REMINDER, THAT YOU MAY BE
MINDFUL OF THE WORDS WHICH WERE
SPOKEN BEFORE BY
THE HOLY PROPHETS,
AND OF THE COMMANDMENTS
OF US THE APOSTLES
OF THE LORD AND SAVIOR...”
2 Pet. 3:1-2
THE HOLY PROPHETS THE HOLY APOSTLES The foundation for this spiritual house is
clearly defined. It is the sayings of Christ,
the sayings of the prophets and the
sayings of the apostles.
In essence, it is the contents of the Word
of God upon which this spiritual house is
to be built.
