Below are four direct quotes from various popular grace teachers that will prove to you that they are
preaching “pre-forgiveness of sins,” not only past (which is biblical), but also sins of the future
(unbiblical). Who is preaching this perversion of grace is not the issue. We will avoid naming names of
such modern-day teachers in case they repent of abusing the true grace message. This is a wide-
spread error being taught to God’s people. Believe this kind of unsound doctrine and you will never
“deal thoroughly with sin” as A. W. Tozer warns us to do. Consider these quotes:
“…I FOUND “Do you realize that when God forgives you, he forgives your past,
IT your present and your future sin? Some people struggle with that terribly.
They think that God only forgives them of all the sin they committed until
NECESSARY
TO WRITE they were converted. I had a lady tell me one day, she said, “You know, I
TO YOU know my sins were forgiven when I accepted Christ, but I’ve done a lot of
EXHORTING
YOU TO other sin. How am I forgiven for that?” Well, you were already forgiven.”
CONTEND
EARNESTLY “Positional” forgiveness is that which is obtained by every believer in Christ.
FOR THE In our position as members of the Body of Christ, we have been forgiven of
every sin we have ever committed or ever will commit. The price paid by
FAITH Christ on the cross has satisfied God’s wrath against sin, and no further
WHICH WAS sacrifice or payment is necessary. When Jesus said, “It is finished,” He
ONCE FOR meant it. Our positional forgiveness was obtained then and there.”
ALL “…and for those that are already saved, your sins have already been
DELIVERED forgiven, past, present and future (note, this is not a license to sin, but even
if we were to totally walk away from God and indulge in reprobate lifestyles,
TO THE
SAINTS. we will still be saved.”
FOR “When God forgives, He draws the mark through every sin which the believer ever has
CERTAIN committed, or ever will commit,. . . and when God’s love covers the big sins it covers the
MEN HAVE little ones, and they are all gone at once! When God forgives, He not only forgives all, but
CREPT IN once for all. . . . By one sacrifice there is a full remission of all sin that ever was against a
UNNOTICED believer, or that ever will be against him . . . not a single sin shall ever stand against you,
nor shall you ever be punished for a single sin; for every sin is forgiven, fully forgiven, so
… that not even part of the punishment shall be executed against you.”
WHO TURN
THE GRACE
OF OUR
GOD INTO
LICENTIOUS
NESS…”
Jude 3-4
Perhaps it may surprise you, but this last quote was not made by a
modern-day grace teacher, but rather is a quote from the late Charles
Spurgeon. Although best known for his great oratory skills and mastery of
the English language, Spurgeon was also guilty of promoting this false
doctrine of “pre-forgiveness of sins.”
“…A BRITISH BAPTIST PREACHER. PEOPLE STILL KNOW HIM AS “THE PRINCE OF Charles Spurgeon
PREACHERS.” SPURGEON WOULD OFTEN PREACH 10 TIMES A WEEK AT DIFFERENT PLACES.
HIS SERMONS HAVE BEEN TRANSLATED INTO MANY LANGUAGES.
TODAY, THERE ARE MORE WRITINGS AND BOOKS BY SPURGEON THAN BY ANY OTHER
CHRISTIAN WRITER.” Wikipedia Enc.
That last statement is significant: “Today, there are more writings and books by Spurgeon than by
any other Christian writer.” Perhaps this literary phenomena accounts for why Christianity is so
inundated today with so many grace teachers espousing the same extreme doctrine of grace that
Spurgeon embraced. They are direct protégées of Spurgeon’s theology. It is not coincidence that
most of the modern-day teachers of pre-forgiveness of sins are Baptist, as was Spurgeon. The
Baptists are staunch defenders of the theology of Calvinism. Here are Spurgeon’s own words about
the importance of the theology of Calvinism:
“I suppose there are some persons whose minds naturally incline towards the doctrine of
free-will. I can only say that mine inclines as naturally towards the doctrines of sovereign
grace…I have my own private opinion that there is no such thing as preaching Christ and Him
crucified, unless we preach what nowadays is called Calvinism. It is a nickname to call it
Calvinism; Calvinism is the gospel, and nothing else. I do not believe we can preach the
gospel, if we do not preach justification by faith, without works; nor unless we preach the
sovereignty of God in His dispensation of grace…” http://www.spurgeon.org/calvinis.htm
