P. 17
“GOD RESISTS THE PROUD, 17
BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE.”
Jas. 4:6
“BURDENED BEYOND MEASURE,
ABOVE STRENGTH…
THAT WE SHOULD NOT TRUST 2 Cor. 1:8-9
IN OURSELVES BUT IN GOD…”
From “…MY GRACE IS SUFFICIENT
FOR YOU…
the opening FOR MY STRENGTH IS MADE PERFECT
thoughts in 2 Corinthians IN WEAKNESS…
Chapter One, to his closing
thoughts in Chapter Twelve, THAT THE POWER OF CHRIST 2 Cor. 12:9-10
the theme of Paul is God’s enabling grace working MAY REST UPON ME…
through a humble spirit that empowered him to
endure all of his hardships and trials. FOR WHEN I AM WEAK,
Humility (“poor in spirit”) is the key to receiving God’s enabling grace. THEN I AM STRONG.”
God will always resist the proud, but give His grace only to the humble.
For that reason, it is
“…BETTER TO BE OF A HUMBLE SPIRIT WITH THE LOWLY…”
Prov. 16:18-19
“… DO NOT SET YOUR MIND ON HIGH THINGS, BUT ASSOCIATE WITH THE HUMBLE.
DO NOT BE WISE IN YOUR OWN OPINION.”
Rom 12:16
“FOR I SAY, THROUGH THE GRACE GIVEN TO ME, TO EVERYONE WHO IS AMONG YOU,
NOT TO THINK OF HIMSELF MORE HIGHLY THAN HE OUGHT TO THINK…
Rom 12:3
There is no greater comparison between the “poor in spirit” and the “proud in spirit” than in a parable
Jesus taught in Luke 18 in which He gave a stern warning to the prideful high-mindedness and self-
righteousness the Pharisees bestowed upon themselves at the expense of others. The “proud in spirit”
think HIGHLY of themselves and LOWLY of others! Beware: pride breeds the sin of being highly
judgmental. “ALSO HE SPOKE THIS PARABLE TO SOME
WHO TRUSTED IN THEMSELVES …
AND DESPISED OTHERS:
"TWO MEN WENT UP TO AND THE TAX COLLECTOR,
THE TEMPLE TO PRAY, STANDING AFAR OFF,
ONE A PHARISEE AND THE WOULD NOT SO MUCH AS
OTHER A TAX COLLECTOR. RAISE HIS EYES TO HEAVEN,
THE PHARISEE STOOD AND
PRAYED THUS WITH HIMSELF, BUT BEAT HIS BREAST,
SAYING,
'GOD, 'GOD,
I THANK YOU
BE MERCIFUL TO ME
THAT I AM A SINNER!‘
NOT LIKE OTHER MEN -- I TELL YOU,
EXTORTIONERS, UNJUST,
THIS MAN WENT DOWN TO
ADULTERERS, HIS HOUSE JUSTIFIED
OR EVEN AS THIS
TAX COLLECTOR. RATHER THAN THE OTHER;
I FAST TWICE A WEEK; FOR EVERYONE WHO EXALTS
I GIVE TITHES OF ALL HIMSELF WILL BE HUMBLED,
THAT I POSSESS.'
AND HE WHO HUMBLES
HIMSELF WILL BE EXALTED."
Luke 18:9-14
