P. 32
The illustration of being yoked together with Jesus can
better be understood by looking at the dual
purpose of a yoke. It is true that oxen are kept
together by a yoke upon their necks for the
simple purpose of sharing the load equally.
However, a yoke is also used for the purpose of
training.
When a new ox is to be trained to plough, it is yoked together with an older seasoned ox in order that
the inexperienced ox can learn how to walk in the same direction and speed as the older more
experienced ox.This is why Jesus promise said:
“Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me…For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
Have you ever tried a dual paddle boat like this one?
The first time I took my wife out on a lake in one of these she said to
me, “My, this is quite easy to paddle.”
That is when I stopped paddling for a moment and she quickly found
out that her old seasoned “ox” was doing most of the hard work!
When we are yoked together with Jesus we discover that not only is
His yoke easy, but the burden for us becomes lighter.
“…WE ARE GOD’S
FELLOW-WORKERS…”
1 Cor. 3:9
AND THE The practical way to see “THE WORD AND THE
ourselves “yoked with Jesus” OF GOD”
YOKED TOGETHER is to remember that Jesus is
“The Word of God” (Rev. !9:13).
Coming under the yoke of
God’s Word is the very
same as being yoked
together with Jesus!
This is why James
tells us to:
“RECEIVE WITH YOKED TOGETHER
THE IMPLANTED WORD WHICH IS ABLE TO SAVE YOUR SOULS…” Jas.1:21
God’s Word ( which is Jesus), is God’s source of strength for His people. In a sense, if properly
understood, it is true that “meekness is weakness.” By that I simply mean that meekness recognizes
our own weaknesses. That is why Paul taught believers what he himself learned from God:
“AND HE SAID TO ME, ‘MY GRACE IS SUFFICIENT FOR YOU,
FOR MY STRENGTH IS MADE PERFECT IN WEAKNESS…’
THAT THE POWER OF CHRIST MAY REST UPON ME…
FOR WHEN I AM WEAK, THEN I AM STRONG.” 2 Cor. 12:9-10
“…I CAN DO ALL THINGS THROUGH CHRIST WHO STRENGTHENS ME.”
Phil. 4:13
People who are meek are weak only in trusting themselves. They are strong like Moses, and like Paul,
because in MEEKNESS they seek strength from a higher source than themselves. They draw strength
from being yoked to something stronger than themselves.
