I have stressed to you earlier that the contents of the Beatitudes of Matthew Five are not “new
treasures” in God’s Word, but rather originated as “old treasure.” The Beatitudes are stated quite
simply and without amplification. That amplification is often found in the Old Testament where that truth
originated. If we don’t compare the old to the new then we will be deficient in understanding.

Remember, we opened by quoting this comment made by the “THIS IS
Greek scholar, William Barclay, about the difficulty of translating the THE MOST UNTRANSLATABLE
meaning of the word “meekness.” It requires consideration of its
use in Scripture to shed light on its full meaning. OF WORDS

Psalm 37:11 states, “BUT the meek shall inherit the earth, and NO SINGLE WORD IS SUFFICIENT

connects this concluding thought to all the verses above it in which WE MUST LOOK TO THE USE OF THE

Verse 9 of Psalm 37 says, “For evildoers shall be cut off, BUT those who wait on the Lord, they shall
inherit the earth.” Verse 9 as well as verse 11 are the summarization of the promise to those who will
inherit the earth. It is “THE MEEK” that will inherit the earth. Psalm 37 therefore constitutes what it
means to be meek. It consists of these factors that help us to understand what it means to live a life of
meekness before the Lord which will lead to being among those who “inherit the earth.” Here are eight
things listed in the first 11 verses that “spell” for us the meaning of such meekness:

These are the things that lead A RECIPE FOR MEEKNESS
up to the verse stating that the BEFORE GOD (Psm. 37)
meek will inherit the earth.
These eight things constitute a 1. “TRUST IN THE LORD”
meek attitude toward God. 2. “FEED ON HIS FAITHFULNESS”
Notice the number of action 3. “DELIGHT YOURSELF IN THE LORD”
verbs, 4. “COMMIT YOUR WAY TO THE LORD”
” TRUST…FEED… 5. “REST IN THE LORD”
DELIGHT… 6. “WAIT PATIENTLY FOR HIM”
COMMIT…REST…. 7. “CEASE FROM ANGER-FORSAKE WRATH”
WAIT… CEASE… 8 “DO NOT FRET-IT ONLY CAUSES HARM”
(DO NOT) FRET…”

This is a recipe for developing
and manifesting those things
in our lives that produce
meekness before God. Do
these things in God’s strength,
and you will inherit the earth!
