AN EXAMINATION OF
“AND IT CAME TO PASS, AS HE WAS PRAYING IN A CERTAIN PLACE,
WHEN HE CEASED, THAT ONE OF HIS DISCIPLES SAID TO HIM,
‘LORD, TEACH US TO PRAY, AS JOHN ALSO TAUGHT HIS DISCIPLES.’
SO HE SAID TO THEM, ‘WHEN YOU PRAY, SAY:
OUR FATHER IN HEAVEN:
From the above graphic emphasis I have highlighted, it is easy to see that this special prayer Christ
gave to His Church is plainly divided into two separate trains of thought:
1. Things pertaining to “US” as believers on earth…
2. Things pertaining to “YOUR” (God’s) name, Kingdom and will…
In the November 2009 Newsletter, “Lord, Teach Us To Pray”, we examined the four statements which
pertain to “US” as believers on earth. In this month’s newsletter, we want to take a look at the intention
of Jesus’ words in commanding believers to also pray a higher form of prayer that centers not upon us,
but upon things that pertain to God. Specifically singled out are things that pertain to His Name, His
Kingdom, and His will:
“OUR FATHER IN HEAVEN,
HALLOWED BE YOUR NAME.
YOUR KINGDOM COME.
YOUR WILL BE DONE
ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN.”
